What Do Simrad and Great White Sharks Have in Common?
When you think of Simrad® Marine Electronics, cutting-edge technology and a passion for the sea likely come to mind. But what do we have in common with one of the ocean’s most formidable predators, the great white shark? The answer lies in our ongoing partnership with Gray FishTag Research, where our shared commitment to marine conservation and research takes center stage.
A Partnership That Makes Waves
Simrad® electronics has been a proud supporter of Gray FishTag Research for years, backing their mission to provide critical data for fish species around the globe. Our collaboration has enabled their team to gather vital information, contributing to the protection and understanding of marine ecosystems. But it’s the groundbreaking studies on great white sharks that truly highlight the power of this partnership.
Tracking the Ocean’s Apex Predator
On February 14, 2024, Captain Jimmy and his team embarked on a significant mission: to tag their third great white shark off the coast of Georgia. This wasn’t just another tagging operation. It was an emotional tribute to fallen Army Ranger Staff Sergeant Stevon Booker, who was honored by naming the tagged shark after him.
The 14-foot great white, now known as “Stevon Booker,” was equipped with a satellite tag designed to collect data for six months. This tag tracked the shark's incredible journey—1,352 straight-line nautical miles from its initial tagging point to its release offshore Quebec, Canada. The data collected during this migration will provide invaluable insights into the behavior and travel patterns of these magnificent creatures.
Honoring Heroes, Advancing Science
This project is more than just about tagging sharks. It’s about honoring those who have served, like Staff Sergeant Booker, and using advanced technology to further our understanding of the ocean’s apex predators. The data collected from this study not only honors a hero but also contributes to marine conservation efforts, ensuring that future generations can continue to study and protect these incredible animals.
The Role of Simrad® marine electronics

So, what does the Simrad® brand and great white sharks have in common? A commitment to exploration, a dedication to advancing marine science, and a shared journey that spans thousands of miles across the ocean. Together with Gray FishTag Research, we’re not just observing the ocean—we’re understanding it, one tag at a time.
